The All-Party Parliamentary Sustainable Resource Group (APSRG), in partnership with the North London Waste Authority (NLWA), is hosting a parliamentary panel discussion to explore current challenges and emerging opportunities in the policy area to reduce waste from absorbent hygiene products (AHPs) in the UK.
Absorbent hygiene products – including nappies, incontinence products and period products – represent a significant and growing waste stream in the UK, with major implications for local authorities, households, and the environment. These products are difficult to manage, contributing heavily to both carbon emissions and disposal costs, yet each year it is estimated that in excess of 1 million tonnes of AHPs are disposed of, the vast majority incinerated or sent to landfill.
This event will provide a space to explore current challenges and emerging opportunities in the policy environment to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency, and support more sustainable systems for managing these materials. Hear from a panel which brings together representatives from Parliament, local government, industry, and expert organisations, followed by a Q&A discussion with attendees.
The meeting will be chaired by Tristan Osborne MP, chair of the APSRG.
Speakers include:
- Cllr Clyde Loakes MBE, Chair, North London Waste Authority
- Rhiannon Chapple, nappiCycle
- Prof. Mark Miodownik, UCL
- Elisabeth Whitebread, Sprout
