Devolution and Skills – 1st Evidence Session for Skills 2030

The first evidence session for the Skills Commission’s Skills 2030 inquiry will focus on the theme: “Devolution and skills policy: how and when does it work most effectively?”

The Skills Commission is running an inquiry – “Skills 2030 – A World Class Skills System”, chaired by Barry Sheerman MP and Sir John Hayes MP.

The first evidence session will gather evidence about devolution and skills in England. It is being held at West Yorkshire Combined Authority in Leeds, with Tracy Brabin, the Mayor of West Yorkshire.

Topics to be addressed include:

1. – Has the devolution of the adult education budget to combined authorities been a success? 
2. – What, if any, other powers should be devolved to the local level to improve the quality and relevance of education and training available to people? At what level of locality should these powers be held?
3. – Are there concerns with skills devolution or devolving a particular part of the skills system? 
4. – What steps can be taken to improve collaboration in the skills system at the local level between local authorities, employers, and education providers?
