Policy Connect’s Higher Education Commission, is hosting a parliamentary event to launch Trained for Tomorrow: A Plan for the Future NHS Workforce.
Trained for Tomorrow sets out an evidence-based programme of reform to address the structural barriers preventing the NHS from building the workforce it needs. The report calls for stronger coordination between government, education providers, NHS employers, and professional regulators to support a more sustainable and inclusive workforce pipeline.
At this event, we will present the report’s key recommendations, including the establishment of a national coordination network, new financial incentives to widen participation and improve retention, and reforms to apprenticeship and flexible study pathways designed to make healthcare careers more accessible to people from a wider range of backgrounds. We will also explore proposals to expand regional placement coordination networks, remove regulatory barriers to curriculum innovation, and tackle entrenched inequalities in access to continuing professional development (CPD), which continue to limit career progression, particularly for ethnic minority staff, part-time workers, and those in rural and remote areas.
A cross-party panel of parliamentarians, healthcare education experts, NHS leaders, and students and practitioners with lived experience will respond to the findings and discuss what it will take to translate these recommendations into lasting systemic change. The launch will be co-chaired by Lord Philip Norton of Louth, Kevin McKenna MP, and Professor Kathryn Mitchell (the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Derby).
The Health Education and Training Inquiry was made possible through the support of the University of Derby, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and iheed. The launch event is kindly sponsored by the University of Greenwich.
