Joined Up Acquired Brain Injury Data for Better Care

13:00-15:00

Acquired brain injuries (ABIs) are a shrouded spectre in society. These 'hidden' disabilities affect the lives of millions of Britons, posing life-changing complications, care needs, and obstacles to social and economic participation.

ABIs entail extensive human and economic costs on victims, support networks and society, with some cost estimates totalling £15 billion to the UK economy each year.

But assessing the actual burden of ABIs is challenging: ABIs are idiosyncratic, can transform any aspect of a victim's life, and are typically poorly understood by professionals and the public alike.

Broad collaboration is required to shed light on the spectrum of life effects and social costs of ABIs. This roundtable, chaired by Sir John Hayes MP and held in partnership with the University of Essex, will bring together stakeholders to join up disparate data and uncover the hidden costs of ABIs.

Outcomes will inform the Government's long-term health planning and its bespoke strategy to support the victims of ABIs.
