In support of Gas Safety Week 2024, Policy Connect were joined by Baroness Ilora Finlay to host a Reception on behalf of the Gas Safe Register in Parliament.

The fourteenth annual Gas Safety Week took place last week, with stakeholders from across industry coming together to support an important cause – keeping the nation gas safe.

Across several excellent speeches, participants noted the importance of awareness, education, and intelligence around gas safety in the efforts to reduce preventable deaths:

  • Awareness of the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning from gas is key – everyone from policymakers to the public, to trusted intermediaries such as GPs and fire and rescue servicepeople, should be aware of the spectrum of health risks of carbon monoxide exposure.
  • Many professionals have a role to play in supporting gas safety, from educating residents to inspecting risks in homes. Joining up the intelligence that these services hold, such as possible CO incidents and alarm activations, will be key to better informed gas safety policy.
  • Education around gas safety should begin in school years, along with efforts to train more professionals to support the future of gas safety.

Speakers at the reception included:

  • Jonathan Samuel, Gas Safe Register
  • Gordon Lishman, Gas Safe Charity
  • Sam Graham and Kate Ravenscroft, Cadent
  • Kate Rose, Gas Safe registered engineer
