Aldo Gianola
Aldo joined Policy Connect in July 2026 as a Fellow with the Accessibility team.
He is a PhD researcher and Guest Lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London. His research uses in-depth qualitative methods to explore the lived experiences of people living with complex mental health conditions, with a particular focus on relational experiences. His interests span public health policy, public and patient involvement in healthcare, and innovation in qualitative research methodologies. His doctoral research is funded by the UCL, Bloomsbury and East London Doctoral Training Partnership (UBEL DTP), through the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
Before beginning his PhD, Aldo undertook a significant career transition, moving from architecture into the mental health charity sector and then into academia. He holds a First Class BSc (Hons) in Psychology and an MSc with Distinction in Psychological Research Methods from Birkbeck, University of London.
Alongside his doctoral research at Birkbeck, Aldo works as a Guest Lecturer on the postgraduate Qualitative Research Methods module and as a Demonstrator on modules related to qualitative methodologies in psychology.
Outside work, Aldo enjoys rock climbing, playing chess, guitar, and legacy video games — all with very mixed outcomes. He also loves gardening and hiking in the mountains.
