Industrial processes, excluding power generation, are responsible for around one-third of global energy use and 40% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. UK industries directly generate around 18% of the country’s total CO2 emissions and are responsible for around 30% of end-user emissions when energy use is taken into account.
Three major industry sectors which are responsible for a high proportion of emissions (>70% globally) are iron and steel, chemicals and cement. The diverse range of processes used in these and other sectors means that decarbonising industry in the UK will require many different measures and technologies. This roundtable will explore key industry-wide strategies for decarbonisation, which include: energy efficiency, heat recovery and combined heat and power (CHP); switching to alternative fuels and electricity sources, including grid decarbonisation; and carbon capture and storage (CCS).
