The All Party Parliamentary Manufacturing Group are delighted to be hosting the first in a four part roundtable series on the Energy Intensive Industries and their transition to net zero, in collaboration with the Energy Intensive Users Group (EIUG).

This first session will take place via zoom on the 17th June 2021, 15:00-16:30 and will be chaired by Jack Dromey MP, co-chair of the APMG and Shadow Minister for Cabinet Office. Speakers joining Jack will be joined by  Lord Grimstone, Minister for investment for BEIS and DfT, Bruce Adderley Challenge Director for Transforming Foundation Industries Innovate UK and Andrew Large, Chair of the Energy Intensive Users Group.

The discussion will consider the following questions:
1.    How will EIIs support the UK industrial base as it moves towards complete decarbonisation?
2.    What are the short –term, medium – term and long term challenges for ensuring UK EIIS remain globally competitive? What opportunities does the net zero and digitalisation agenda present for the EIIS and how might these be taken advantage of?
3.    How can we ensure that the EIIS will remain competitive in comparison to its overseas peers?
4.    What policy areas could support the growth of a sustainable and resilient EII sector?

The UK energy intensive industries (EIIs) are vital to the UK’s future economic success. These industries are both strategically important, in that they produce many essential products, as well as being major employers. EIIs are set to become even more important as the UK economy decarbonises – for example, expanding renewable generation capacity requires significant amounts of steel and concrete. Retaining and growing EIIs will therefore be crucial as the UK seeks to achieve its net zero emissions target.
