To ensure post-pandemic growth and that we are able to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, our skills system will need to become more attuned to the changing needs of industry and agile in its delivery. Skills and training interventions must be provided for individuals at various points of their working lives rather than front loading education at the beginning.
Building such a skills system will depend upon strong employer and provider partnerships based around sector and geography. With educational reform on the agenda and Covid-19 presenting questions over the viability of some university provision, this is the ideal time to explore how such partnerships could move us towards a new model of tertiary education, less rooted in an unhelpful academic and vocational divide.
