General practice and dentistry – Nuffield Trust
Policy Connect and the APHG are delivering a series of three parliamentary events, organised in partnership between leading think tanks, the Health Foundation, Nuffield Trust, and The King’s Fund. The series has been tailored to the needs of parliamentarians in conjunction with the All-Party Parliamentary Health Group (APHG) and will be chaired by Dr Simon Opher MP.
Each event will offer an in-depth exploration of a specific area of health and care policy, uniting experts from across all three think tanks. These sessions are designed to provide parliamentarians with comprehensive insights into the state of the nation’s health, and the structure and functioning of health and social care services in the UK, supporting your parliamentary and constituency duties
Session 3: General practice and dentistry – Nuffield Trust
This session will give an overview of the state of general practice and dentistry today. It will set out how general practice works, the rapidly changing shape of the workforce, and the often unequal distribution of funding and staffing. The session will present clear analysis of how appointment and consultation numbers and types have changed, and how public satisfaction has shifted in recent years. For dentistry, we will examine the contract, funding changes, and staffing trends that have left most adults without NHS appointments, with widespread “dental deserts”. We will also look at crucial policy questions for this Parliament including the future of the traditional GP partnership model, and whether NHS dentistry can ever again be a universal service.
The event will be hosted by Dr Becks Fisher, Director of Research and Policy, Nuffield Trust. She will be joined by:
- Beccy Baird, Senior Fellow, The King’s Fund
- Dr Luisa Pettigrew, Senior Policy Fellow, The Health Foundation
