Highlights from the Carbon Monoxide Safe 4 Summer Awareness Campaign
In June 2021, the All Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG) launched “#Carbon Monoxide Safe 4 Summer” for the first time. This public awareness campaign aimed to inform people enjoying BBQs and holidaying across the UK (and beyond!) about the dangers that carbon monoxide can pose, and how to keep themselves and their families safe.
The three key messages of the campaign were:
- BBQs and outdoor wood burners produce carbon monoxide, and should never be brought into tents, garages or covered spaces
- Pack a Carbon Monoxide Alarm when going on holiday
- Safe use of Liquid Petroleum Gas heaters & BBQs
The APPCOG was delighted with the success of the campaign, and thanks all those who got involved, shared the co-ordinated safety messages, and showed united support.
Together, we have made excellent progress improving carbon monoxide awareness this summer!
Parliamentary support
Barry Sheerman MP launches the campaign, 24 June 2021; supported by Jason McCartney MP, Liz Twist MP, Stephanie Peacock MP and Baroness Finlay.
Barry Sheerman MP:
“I have a long standing interest and engagement with Carbon Monoxide poisoning awareness. In 2004, a resident of Huddersfield, Stacy Rodgers, tragically lost her son Dominic to Carbon Monoxide. … Today, I joined Jason McCartney MP, Liz Twist MP, Stephanie Peacock MP and Baroness Finlay to promote the important message of staying carbon monoxide safe in the summer months.”
Baroness Finlay of Llandaff’s podcast
Baroness Finlay took time to speak with Rob Lyon about her personal experience with carbon monoxide, and why it is so important that families and individuals remain aware of this poisonous gas over the summer months. Camping, caravans and boats are all environments that can pose risks, so make sure you know how to stay safe on holiday.
Barry Sheerman MP’s closing message
Co-Chair of the APPCOG, Barry Sheerman closes the campaign by reminding us all of the importance of preventative measures against carbon monoxide exposure at home, such as appliance servicing and making sure that our carbon monoxide alarms are of a good quality and in working order.
