Policy Connect Contribute to New WRAP Report on 'Removing Packaging From Uncut Fresh Produce'
Policy Connect were pleased to assist WRAP in the production of their latest policy report, ‘Policy Recommendations for Removing Packaging from Uncut Fresh Produce’.
The report’s release comes after Policy Connect supported WRAP to explore the policy landscape on packaging and food waste, examine possible policy options to support the reduction of packaging for fresh produce, and collaborated with them to test these with stakeholders.
WRAP’s recommendations represent a significant step change on selling more fresh produce loose. Whilst the report’s findings are clear that this won’t be a simple transition, it is evidently a vital one to reducing both food and packaging waste in the UK.
Having worked alongside industry partners and policymakers in this space during the previous parliament, Policy Connect are determined to create positive change. As our Policy & Research Manager for Sustainability, Katy Haigh, explains:
"Earlier this year, Policy Connect were pleased to support WRAP to explore the policy landscape around reducing both food and packaging waste in the fresh produce sector. Through a series of collaborative workshops involving major UK retailers, fresh produce supply chain stakeholders, trade bodies, and government representatives, we examined what effective policy frameworks might look like for the UK in relation to selling loose, unpackaged produce.
The intersection of food waste reduction and sustainable packaging remains a critical challenge that requires thoughtful policy interventions. As we strive towards a more circular economy for the UK and its citizens, we must find solutions that simultaneously address the reduction of single-use packaging while ensuring we don't inadvertently increase food loss and waste.
I am delighted to see WRAP publish the results of this work, which represents a significant step forward in our understanding of these complex issues. I look forward to engaging with the next steps of this important initiative and continuing to work alongside industry partners and policymakers to create meaningful change in this space.”
Policy Connect are beginning to frame our sustainable resources programme for this Parliament and look forward to conducting work that progresses good policy on reducing food waste and single-use packaging.
