The Move to Improve 2
The latest Skills Commission publication, The Move to Improve 2, a collection of essays from FE colleges on their approaches to improvement is now available and can be downloaded here.
This collection follows The Move to Improve report which assessed the failure regime and improvement processes across the FE system against those in schools, universities, foundation trust hospitals and police forces.
A striking finding of the first Move to Improve report was where it positioned FE colleges in the wider landscape of public service provision. As autonomous, adaptive and independent corporations, colleges have long occupied a space that schools and hospitals are increasingly moving towards, and as such we feel that the best FE colleges are ahead of the curve when it comes to self-intervention and improvement practice.
The 13 contributions from colleges across England depict the improvement journeys and systems deployed to raise standards and seek continual improvements in provision. Whilst the case studies feature a wide range of colleges, clear themes emerge throughout, most notably around strong leadership, clear accountability and focusing on creating the best conditions for improved teaching and learning.
It is our hope that The Move to Improve 2 will help foster a greater discussion around improvement practice in FE colleges; a discussion that will see best practice better understood and shared across the system, and a discussion that will promote the best leadership and governance in the FE sector as a shining example for changing public services to look to.
