The Workforce of the Future - ‘Learning to earning’ transitions and career development in a challenging labour market

The Skills Commission is scoping a new research inquiry on career transitions to be chaired by Nicola Richards MP, West Bromwich East (Con) and Lord Jim Knight of Weymouth (Lab), former Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform.

Enabling people to make informed choices around their skills development will become increasingly important as the Fourth Industrial Revolution continues to transform job profiles and the labour market. This is no-less the case as we begin the feel the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a challenging labour market it will be all the more important to ensure that individuals have access to genuine labour market insight, as well as just 'info', to get a realistic idea of their prospects and the pathways they may need to take. Young people in particular will need to be prepared for a working culture of continual change and may need more structured opportunities to access the labour market in the coming years.

This inquiry will build upon issues identified around careers advice and guidance in the Skills Commission's previous report, England's Skills Puzzle, and will seek to make recommendations to ensure careers services are effectively coordinated so that our skills system addresses skills gaps and facilitates social mobility.
