Economic costs and benefits of nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change

In recent years, awareness of the potential for nature-based solutions to help tackle the climate emergency has grown rapidly. Nature-based solutions involve conserving, managing and restoring ecosystems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide adaptation and resilience gains, and can help us tackle the twin challenges of the climate and biodiversity crises. 

Research has shown that nature can provide around a third of the mitigation needed by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement goals. Nature-based solutions have also been shown to be a vital component of a strong economic recovery, with the potential to create thousands of jobs in shovel-ready projects and contribute towards a green and resilient recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. Financial support for nature-based solutions, both in the UK and globally, needs to be urgently increased, as well as greater understanding of the role they can play and the challenges that they face. 

This webinar is an opportunity for members of the APPCCG to hear about and discuss the role of nature-based solutions in driving a green and resilient recovery in the UK, as well as exploring the global context of natured-based solutions in the preparation for COP26. 

The webinar will launch the new report, ‘Economic costs and benefits of nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change’, written by the RSPB in collaboration with Cambridge Econometrics. Panellists will then provide further input on the topic of nature-based solutions, including the role that they see for nature-based solutions in driving a green and resilient recovery, and the opportunities for nature-based solutions in a global context in the run-up to COP26. This will be followed by a Q&A session to discuss these issues further.
