ERA Foundation Roundtable Series: Committing to an inclusive and accessible STEM sector

15:00 - 16:00

The Industry, Technology and Innovation team will be hosting the final roundtable as part of Policy Connect and ERA Foundation's series on "Supporting UK Manufacturing and Skills in a post Covid-19 world".  This session is also kindly supported by Engineering UK.

The purpose of this session is to explore how as a sector we can develop more concrete action to encourage an inclusive work environment and weave in more diverse expertise. Along with transforming society’s perception of the STEM sector, there are working practices and cultures that must be addressed and reformed.

Chaired by Lord Bilimoria of Chelsea CBE,DL, speakers include:

Dr Hilary Leevers , CEO  - Engineering UK

Dr Nike Folayan, Founder and Chairperson - AFBE-UK

Dr Martin Hollins , Chair - STEM DACC

Discussion topics will include:

1.  What government policy intervention would adequately support the creation of a more inclusive work environment?
2.  How can we rebuild the perception of manufacturing and engineering to ensure that there is sufficient knowledge of these sectors amongst learners?
3.  What concrete steps can we take to make the sector’s work environment more inclusive?
4.  The 2019 Employers skills survey found that two-thirds of skill-shortage vacancies were at least partially caused by a lack of people and personal skills – how can the shortage of such skills be addressed?
