Earlier this week, the All-Party Parliamentary Health Group (APHG) hosted an event on the UK life sciences sector and its role in driving innovation, improving health outcomes and supporting delivery of the 10-Year Health Plan.

Chaired by Sadik Al-Hassan MP, the discussion explored how the Life Sciences Sector Plan can accelerate NHS transformation, foster innovation, and improve access to medicines, medical technologies, and AI-enabled tools.

Participants included parliamentarians, policymakers and sector leaders who examined practical steps to strengthen the UK life sciences ecosystem. Key themes included the need to improve adoption and spread of proven innovation across the NHS; stronger data interoperability to enable prevention and community-based care; boosting UK competitiveness in clinical trials and R&D; and ensuring stable, long-term funding and procurement frameworks that support medtech uptake. Speakers also highlighted the importance of tackling cultural barriers to innovation, improving coding accuracy and patient-level data and better leveraging strengths across the devolved nations.

Speakers included:

  • David Lawson– Director of Medical Technology and Innovation, DHSC
  • Joe Edwards – Director of Competitiveness and Devolved Nations- ABPI
  • Greg Quinn- Director of Public Policy – BD
  • James Bevan– Head of National Policy and Programs -Boehringer Ingelheim
