Arriving at Thriving - ISEND Research Cluster Symposium

15:30-17:00

The University of Derby and Policy Connect are hosting a webinar to revisit Arriving at Thriving: Learning from disabled students to ensure access for all, a report launched with the Higher Education Commission in October 2020.

Drawn from the experiences of disabled individuals in Higher Education, the report outlines lessons for the government and university leaders.

The report highlighted areas for improvement within higher education and presents 12 recommendations for both the government and the sector to enhance the experiences of disabled students. The committee's work, in collaboration with the University of Derby, has also identified best practices that should be shared and replicated.

Chaired by Professor Lord Philip Norton of Louth, the symposium will focus on best practices to support students with disabilities transition from Further Education College into Higher Education. This webinar will be of interest to students, disability advocates, FE providers, HE providers and policy makers.

Professor Kathryn Mitchell, CBE DL (Vice-Chancellor, University of Derby) and Claudia Jaksch (CEO, Policy Connect) will open the session, with summary comments from Professor Lord Philip Norton of Louth.

The session will also feature insights from:

  • Elaine Dale (Director of SEND support City College Norwich, Paston College and Easton College and practitioners).
  • Sam Mayhew (Dean of Faculty for Inclusive Practice, Weston College and practitioners).
  • Tobias Lambe (Medical Student who identifies as having a disability).
  • Jo Tolley (Research administrator at the University of Derby, and a disability consultant).
