Callum McCaig MP is the SNP’s Energy and Climate Change spokesperson in the House of Commons and a member of the Carbon Connect Advisory Board.

“The UK Government remains legally bound to reduce emissions by 80% against 1990 levels, and to do that they will need to implement effective policy and action. The EU referendum result is not an excuse to allow commitments on decarbonisation and renewables to be reneged on, no matter how much change and upheaval has taken place over the past few weeks. We need carbon capture and storage, energy storage, transport and heat decarbonisation to be top priorities – as highlighted by the Committee on Climate Change.

“In addition to changes in the government, the total abolition of a dedicated Department of Energy and Climate Change has presented numerous challenges going forward. Even removing the phrase ‘climate change’ from government department briefs has symbolic and practical implementations. However, just because a title has been removed does not mean decarbonisation of energy supply can be diluted and neglected.

“Despite the short-sighted decisions being taken by the UK Government on these issues, I will continue to have a long term outlook on ensuring cleaner energy capture and storage solutions are implemented and to work to ensure the Prime Minister and her Cabinet do not allow these issues to fall by the wayside, and welcome the opportunity to work with Carbon Connect in this endeavour.”
